Overview of scratch built RC airplane model Cessna-150

This is overview of scratch built RC model Cessna-150 from the site rc-aviation.ru. This was my first built model and I’ve already written a bit about it.

In this article I will describe main characteristics of this airplane model and own impressions about building and flying it.

I have crashed my airplane few times and also had an accident with burnt battery:

So, Cessna-150 is pretty lightweight airplane RC model with size under 1 meter. Wing can be removed from fuselage for easy transportation. This parkflyer has small V-angle of the wing and is very stable during flights what makes it as a great trainer for first flights. This airplane is looking more as scaled model.

My impressions after flights in windy weather: the model is very stable and can flight even with wind up to 5 m/s.

Another great thing about this RC airplane is that it is very easy to build and repair. I am not going to write instructions here but just will cover main advantages of this mode. This airplane can be built of 3-4 mm depron or similar material. In Eastern European countries we use 3 mm foam which use for ceiling decorations. Some details should be made of 6 mm depron or you can just glue two 3 mm depron sheets.

Fuselage is glued of 3 mm depron details which forms box carcase. Nose is additionally reinforced with additional detail.

Cessna-150 fuselage

Wing is fully made of foam without any wooden details. Sure you can use carbon tubes or rods to reinforce wing but it would be necessary only if you are going to use your Cessna for active aerobatics. Since usually this will be your trainer, it is not necessary. To mount wing on fuselage you can use rubber.

Other flying and control surfaces are made of 6 mm foam sheet.

Cessna-150 motor mount

Motor mount is made of 3 mm plywood and glued to the fuselage foam.

Airplane is covered by colored scotch tape; you can also use modeling covering films.

Electronic parts I use are not very expensive but have great performance. Everything can be ordered at HobbyKing site.

Donkey ST2004-1550kv Brushless Motor

This is very good cheap heavy duty motor with massive mount. The only disadvantage is that it doesn’t have prop saver included so you need to order it separately:

Speed controller I use cannot be programmed but is actually is good to connect and fly: Hobbyking SS Series 18-20A ESC . Read more about this ESC in overview article about HobbyKing SS ESC.

Servos for ailerons and elevator:

HXT900 9g / 1.6kg / .12sec Micro Servo

Servo for rudder

HXT500 5g / .8kg / .10sec Micro Servo

These are very great value for money servos.

Battery

Turnigy nano-tech 850mah 3S 25~40C Lipo Pack

Propellers

GWS EP Propeller (RD-8043 203x109mm)

GWS EP Propeller (DD-8040 203x102mm)

I like the latter ones more as it is harder to break them during landing or accidental fall.
